A look at what I’m currently working on as well as other areas I’m digging into to learn more about!

Serious Game Design – Mission Impossible

The Sententia Games Master Craftsman Certification is a three part certification surrounding best practices for designing learning games that engage and foster learning and/or practicing concepts to foster engagement and retention. I have completed the first two certifications and look forward to wrapping up the final level during the summer of 2024.

The Journey Begins….

The Level 1 Gamification Certification through Sententia provided a taste of building an effective game for learning and provided an opportunity to practice an assigned game build while working with a team of peers.  Our build earned an outstanding rating and was showcased during 2022-2023 as an example on the Sententia Games website.

The quest continues….

I wanted to dive deeper so I enrolled in the Level 2 certification for Journeyman.  During this, the second level of the certification, I dove deeper into effective game design concpets while creating a detailed overview of a gamified course.  The resulting project is a map to the final game design build through a detailed storyboard in preparation for the game design that takes place in level three of the certifiation.

My chosen topic – a gamified course for Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) as they work with an Instructional Designer to transition a course to an effective, engaging, online format.  My submission also recevied an outstanding rating and is currently showcased on the Sententia Games Student Portfolio website.

To be continued…

I enrolled in the final level of the quest to achieve Master Craftsman Certification during the summer of 2024. Stay tuned to follow my journey as I dive more deeply into games as a source of engagement for deeper learning and effective transfer of learning to long-term memory.

Quality Matters!

In online course design a quality assurance metric can take an online course to the next level when it comes to ensuring students use their congitive load to engage with course content!  Quality Matters is a nationwide organization wherein course reviews can be done internally by certified peer reviewers working internally for thier institution, however requests can also be made to have a course reviewed on a national level to earn a Quality Matters badge to append to a course.  Three courses led to this Peer Reviewer Certification and after completing two national reviews I will qualify to take the next step to Master Reviewer.

CU’s Toastmaster’s Chip Chat Membership Expansion Video

Man standing in office gesturing to text "CU Chip Chat. An introduction to Toastmasters".

This was actually my first creation.  I created this in conjunction with a quick project I needed to knock out in conjunction with an officer project for our CU Boulder Chip Chat Toastmaster’s club where I am VP of Education.  The existing Toastmaster’s Chip Chat chapter has been open to HR and Infrastucture and Sustainability staff for a number of years, however now that we are established we are looking to open the program to other areas of the university.  This video was born of a proposal to be used as a marketing tool once we are ready to announce the change to welcome members from other areas of the university.  The project itself is still in draft mode.  Once we finalize language, submit to our compliance department for review, then I’ll move to another program, potentially Camtasia or YouTube, to add closed captions and request a review for accessibility to ensure I covered everything according to university standards.

Here’s the first draft, created in about an hour after signing up for the free trial.  I have lots to learn but definitely like the tool and am excited to be able to pull a completed video into Storyline and add other elements through the use of hotspots to trigger to learning content.  I can see this being a great tool to use with branching scenarios and other learning content!

What is Micro-learning – Anytime, Anywhere, Small Bits of Learning

  • Most learners have snippets of time they either like to or can fill with learning something. This is especially true for adults with busy lives and young adults navigating classes and other commitments.
  • Micro Learning can usually be accessed from a number of different types of devices which makes it key to delivery or locating learning content on your computer, tablet, or phone. That means you can grab what you need on the go. Sounds kind of like that quick snack you look forward to when your tummy growls around break time!
  • Micro Learning gives them short snippets of learning content which are more easily digested, easier to find time to knock out, and serve as just in time learning opportunities when you want to learn or review something right as you’re trying to do it.
    • Here’s a question for you: Why is learning on YouTube so popular?
    • It’s quick easy, on the spot learning when you need it.  Who can resist that…

Micro Learning is an area with great potential for our staff, the difficult part is the shift of mindset to the realization that on their phones lie a collection of toolsPicture of clock face with legs, walking. there to help them as they navigate their day.  We retain our staff, turn-over is low, and although this is evidence of a great place to work it can also be a place where resistance to change and use of new tools is commonplace.   Although micro learning can be accessed in a variety of ways, our staff is in the field a majority of the day which presents double the challenge.  First the recognition that the tools are there for them to reference as needed, then helping them see the value in using tools available to them as a job aid even while in the field.   We recognize micro-learning as the great time-saver while on the run!
