YOU CHALLENGE #1

Begin your first “You Challenge”Man balance walking on vertical logs

From the syllabus, these are “small challenges I design specifically for you.  Once we get to know each other a bit, I will design a small project specifically for you – something to take you out of your comfort zone.”

These are drawn from our class discussions and interests you’ve indicated.  Also, designed to be a challenge to you – do NOT use a tool or platform you have already used.  Whatever storytelling tool you use – it must be new to you.

You have two weeks to complete this (due: Sunday April 28th) but I would get started now if I were you.  All of the YOU Challenges for this module are listed under the YOU tab above - so you can see what others are being asked to do as well.  Find yours. Ask for questions or guidance if you need. Make it.  Post/link it here by Sunday April 28th.

Shawna Stushnoff: Design a lightweight story-game using Metaverse (Links to an external site.) and multiple forms of media. The game should both tell astory – and require the user to contribute their own media to the story. Share the QR code to launch your game, so we can play.

I worked in my assigned tool, Metaverse, to create an experience teaching kids about instruments in an orchestra.

Introductory screen of the game with an image, the game title, a description of the game and an icon at the top with a 'play' icon in the middle to start the game.Metaverse was created by a small start up consisting of three individuals who realized the world was about to change dramatically. Their goal was to change how AR can be used in education by providing a tool that facilitates the rapid creation of interactive experiences. You can also weave VR into the mix, therefore experiences are not always rendered in augmented reality, it’s up to you! It can load websites, call for player responses, and track some things.  This “start-up” APP packs a lot of punch, giving you the power to create an interactive experience.  My goal was to combine a number of the elements so you could see what it’s capable of with a fairly amount of time invested to learn the tool.

The focus is on an interactive experience without using code. You create scenes, the things the learner sees, watches, reads, or does on screen.,  The scenes are linked to one another using blocks thad add the logic you want to apply between the scenes.  For example, if they click a button “a” they are sent to this screen, if they click “b” they go to that screen.  Scenes and blocks are organized on a storyboard that allows you to drag and drop to move the pieces around as you create them or change your flow.

Framework for Peter In The Wolf Metaverse game, similar to a card deck laid out in rows on a table with lines connecting different cards in different rows.

Users access experiences through the Metavers App which runs on both IOS and Android platforms. Experiences are easily shared via an email link, on Facebook, users can search for them within the app, or scan a QR code.  If you don’t already have the App it will prompt you to install it when you try to access the experience. You can save your favorites to your phone’s desktop to easily access them to play them. Metaverse also has the ability to send push notifications, can you imagine popping up on a student’s phone to ask them if they’d like to earn some extra credit?!

You’ll need to add the Metaverse app to your phone to launch the Peter and the Wolf experience, the QR code is below.  I did find it to be a bit glitchy if I was somewhere the internet was slow…

Ready to Play?

Look for the Metaverse app on your phone, then scan the QR code below!Opening screen of the game with Peter standing in the room you are in saying "Hi, I'm Peter! What's your name?"

Before you go remember the following:

  • This is an AR experience that jumps into the room you are in!
  • It launchesand plays based on the position of your phone, the experience is best viewed on a light background to target your phone to a lighter space in the room.
  • If it seems to be stuck and you don’t have a button to make a choice you may have shifted your phone’s position.  Move your phone back to where you started and it should come back up.

Class Comment:

It’s interesting that three of you chose metaverse as your medium and each experience was a little different. This was also very well put together with multipl media types. The one thing that was ackward for me is I scanned the QR code from pretty far away so at first I did not see Peter directing me to answer the questions. I liked how you added him and how he instructed me to the questions. I also enjoyed earning the instruments. I can see this as a great asset for many uses in the classroom.

Great Job
Thanks For sharing

Did you already have a background working with Metaverse!?  It was really cool that you were able to get some solid AR on there, I was pretty surprised when Peter just popped up on my desk.  Very cool interface and I enjoyed playing the game.  I did have an issue getting the sound to come through; I somehow remembered the instruments and was able to progress to the second challenge!

Thank you for this, it was a lot of fun!

I did not, it was all new to me.  Which shows that it’s not too hard to pick up on how to create using it and once you’ve done one the next one is even easier!

Accessible, free AR. Awesome! The app download and QR code scan were simple. Great job on the content, what a fun way to learn. Can you customize the avatar? For example, could the students design there own, or could you insert yourself as the teacher into the game?

You actually can.  You can use the bitmoji to create the avatar and then upload into the metaverse.  They will show the in the characters under “my creations”.

I do like the idea of Metaverse, and you did a great job. I agree that it is a bit glitchy sometimes.

Shawna,

This was such a cool experience!! Metaverse gave me great ideas for delivering training to my staff. Like Greg mentioned, I also had issues getting the sound to come through but I loved the experience. Great job putting it together.
